What is blood pressure?
Blood pressure is the pressure of blood in your arteries – the vessels that carry your blood from your heart to your brain and the rest of your body. You need a certain amount of pressure to get the blood round your body.
The pressure of the blood flowing through your arteries changes as your heart beats. The pressure in your arteries will be at its highest when your heart is contracting and pumping blood around your body and lowest as it relaxes while it fills with blood before pumping again. 140 over 90 (140/90) or higher (over a number of weeks): You may have high blood pressure (hypertension).
